CHARLOTTE – Week four of the 2022 football season means it is another week of conference play within the CIAA and we saw a game-winning field goal as time expired and we saw one nationally ranked program recover from an early 14-point deficit. Across the league, we also saw players begin stake their claim for postseason honors and teams start to assert themselves in the postseason discussion.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at the week four results for all teams across the conference:
Lincoln (PA) 29, Johnson C. Smith 28
Freshman kicker Joseph Price delivered Lincoln its first road conference win since 2009 when he booted a 19-yard field goal through the uprights as time expired for the Lions. The kick was the culmination of an eight-play, 72-yard drive that needed only 63 seconds. Fellow Lincoln freshman Isaiah Freeman achieved career-high totals of 298 yards passing and four total touchdowns. Previously, it had appeared that the Golden Bulls were going to claim the victory after two fourth quarter touchdowns gave them a 28-26 lead. The final touchdown (a 17-yard Tim Newman Jr. touchdown from Malik Evans) gave JCSU the lead with 1:27 remaining in the game. Lincoln’s Eric Best and Kentrel Pierce each had a goal line interception in the second half to hold off the Golden Bulls. The Lions Kai Gray had a team-high 11 tackles. Newman Jr. led JCSU with 54 yards rushing and he caught two touchdowns and was second on the team with five catches for 60 yards. Jaron Hull had a team-high seven receptions and 120 yards for JCSU. The Golden Bulls’ Benari Black had a team-high 11 tackles and Sincere Bennett had two sacks along with five tackles.

Bowie State 36, Saint Augustine’s 20
It was a slow start for the Bulldogs but they earned their first conference win of the season. Bowie State led 15-7 and had not scored an offensive touchdown entering the fourth quarter. Leading 22-20 late in the fourth quarter, Corey Johnson’s 70-yard touchdown run gave the Bulldogs cushion and Joshua Pryor’s fumble return touchdown left no doubt. The Falcons forced four turnovers to offset the fact that Bowie State had season-high numbers in total yards of offense (503) and rushing (251). St. Aug’s Donovan Brewing tossed a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make it a close, two-point game. DeAndre Proctor had a 51-yard touchdown throw, 44 yards receiving and a receiving touchdown, and led the Falcons with 33 yards rushing. Bowie’s Corey Johnson finished with 117 yards on the ground and Samuel Doku had 59. On defense, the Bulldogs’ Keith Williams had two interceptions and Jadon Carter returned one pick for a 38-yard touchdown. For the Falcons, Ty’queron Hines had two interceptions and six tackles while Lee Sales wrecked havoc with a game-high three tackles for a loss and two sacks.

Elizabeth City State 16, Shaw 35
Leading 20-16 at halftime, Shaw blanked the Vikings in the second half and tacked. The Bears’ Christian Peters found Ah’Shaan Belcher for a 44-yard touchdown right before halftime and then the Shaw defense added a fumble return touchdown and a pick-six in the fourth quarter. ECSU had an early 9-7 lead with an 80-yard pick-six from Demorian Smith and then a safety in consecutive drives. Tesean Jones’ eight-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Saunders helped the Vikings regain the lead (16-14) later in the second quarter. Shaw rushed for a season-high 231 yards as a team with Andre Brandon Jr. (76 yards), Sidney Gibbs (70) and Peters (58) combining for all but 27 of those yards. Vikings’ receivers Saunders and Zion Riddick combined for 14 catches and 93 yards. ECSU’s Juanya’ Majette had eight solo tackles, plus a stop for a loss and Tracey White had seven solo tackles and two for a loss. The Bears were led on defense by Jaleel Scroggins and Akeythio Carson, who each had a team-high nine total tackles.

#20 Virginia Union 31, Fayetteville State 28
Fayetteville State struck first with touchdowns on its first two drives of the game, K’Hari Lane found Nique Martin and Barry Elliott for a pair of 40-plus yard scores. By the end of the first quarter, Virginia Union’s Jada Byers had the game tied at 14 with a pair of touchdowns. Trailing 21-14 entering the final frame, Virginia Union added a field goal and then returned an interception 31 yards for its first lead of the game before Byers’ one-yard touchdown made it a two-score game. Byers had 50 rushing yards and averaged 3.4 yards per carry at halftime but finished the contest with 161 yards and a 5.2 average. The Panthers’ win comes despite FSU holding them to season-low totals in offense (scoring, rushing offense, and passing offense). The Broncos actually outgained VUU, 283-237, and their 28 points were a season-high. Elliott had a team-high six catches for 102 yards. K’Hari Lane’s 21 completions, 222 yards, and three touchdowns were all season-highs but he was intercepted thrice. William Davis had the pick-six for the Panthers and Raylyn Manley’s interception and 31-yard return led to a Byers’ touchdown. Damontay Rhem and Shamar Graham combined for 20 tackles and 3.5 stops for a loss for VUU. For the Broncos, Kentrell Caldwell and Camero Merrell each had a game-high 11 tackes, plus 1.5 tackles for a loss.

Virginia State 37, Livingstone 7
Virginia State was pitching a shutout against Livingstone until a fourth-quarter Blue Bears touchdown. The Trojans outgained Livingstone, 493 to 158, and won the turnover battle, 3-1. VSU’s Jordan Davis passed for a career-high 251 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-30 attempts and he added 50 yards and two more scores on the ground. Darius Hagans led the VSU rushing attack with 116 yards and a touchdown. Trojan receivers Roy Jackson III and Tylique Ray combined for eight receptions and 166 yards. For Livingstone, Matthew Henry led the receivers with a game-high seven catches for 53 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Myran Henderson had a game-high 13 tackles, including 10 solo stops for the Blue Bears and Kevin Larkins Jr. had seven solo tackles, plus an interception. For VSU, Miqueal Pillow-Smiley had a team-high five tackles, along with 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

Winston-Salem State 7, Chowan 21
Chowan moves to 2-0 in the CIAA after outgaining WSSU, 314-164, in yardage, and winning the turnover battle 4-1. The Hawks’ Caleb Pierce went 17-of-26 for 187 yards and a touchdown and Nijere Peoples led Chowan with 58 yards on the ground. For the Rams, Asa Barnes’ 67 rushing yards were a game-high. Three Hawks (Bernico Perofeta, Montre Moore, & Raydarius Freeman) registered double-digit tackles and Simeon Burns had nine tackles with two interceptions. The Rams were led in tackling by Jashan Ranking, who finished with seven stops. Deiontae Jones had five tackles and forced a fumble, which was recovered by Jaylen Gullatte, who also had two pass breakups.
